How to spot
a job scam
Fake job offers target people who need work quickly. A few warning signs catch most of them.
Red flags
- They ask you to pay for training, equipment or a background check up front
- They want to send you a check and have you send part of the money back
- An offer arrives without any interview, or only over text chat
- They ask for your Social Security number or bank details before a real offer
- The email comes from a free address while claiming to be a large company
- The pay is far above normal for little work
What to do
- Look up the company's real website and apply through it
- Never pay to get a job
- Don't share bank details until you've signed an offer with a real employer
- Report suspicious listings
